Prof. St George-Hyslop on Motor Neurone Disease (ALS)

  • Darwin Building B40 LT University College London, WC1E 6BT London England (map)

Following the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in the summer of 2014 which led to the breakthrough-discovery of a new ALS-associated gene this year, we are excited to host Professor St George-Hyslop for a talk on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - also known as motor neurone disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease and of which Professor Stephen Hawking famously suffers from. As Professor of Experimental Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and a world-leading expert on neurodegenerative diseases, there is no one better to tackle the subject of motor neurone disease!

Find out how metamorphosis of the FUS protein from liquid to gel controls protein synthesis in spinal cord neurones, and how, according to Professor St George-Hyslop, "the mutations force the gelling process to go further than it should have gone in ALS". We are extremely excited to discover what this might mean for the future of ALS research and therapeutic possibilities. Professor St George-Hyslop will also comment on the current state of ALS research, including other recent breakthroughs in the field.

There will also be a chance for a chat with Professor St George-Hyslop after the talk, as he joins us all for a few drinks!
